Old G8 commander dude was basically luffy's friend by the end, but in this case they were hostile from the start.

This show is real though. The government covered up Alabasta because pirates doing their job makes them look bad. The seven warlords of the sea running free makes them look bad when people see what they're really up to.

Aokiji is saying Nico Robin is a threat to the government in the same exact way. She's only a threat in that she may interfere with their precious power. They don't give a damn about the people or the potential good she could do.

"Every organization she teams up with gets annihilated." Think about that though: Was Crocodile's organization a good thing? The Navy is generally the one destroying good organizations so long as they don't submit and obey, and so far it's been pirates destroying bad organizations that the Navy supported.

This show may seem like a slight exaggeration in its portrayal of government vs the people, but it isn't. This is how it actually works, but we generally just don't see how horrendously corrupt they actually are without experiencing it first hand like in the case of Luffy's crew.

Oh you have no idea yet just how horrible the World Government is as a whole, but I'll avoid saying too much here. To boil it down as simply as possible without overtly spoiling too much, they're the purest expression of a dictatorial state, though the seas are vast enough that they cannot control everything just yet.
